JMTA, a CA firm in India for whom we’re also developing a site, requested a quick presence for them online. And we got to work with a 5 page document that Kaid Auditing Company sent across to us. In 3 hours flat, we had designed their website and gotten it ready for publishing, booked a domain name, mapped DNS to our servers, and published the site.

1. Booking a domain with a Domain Name Registrar like GoDaddy.com
2. Ensuring that registrations of Domain Names are renewed annually or as per the period you have booked the domain name for.

The last point is what we would be looking at when we speak of “Domain Management”

There are 2 main things to be remembered here.

The first concept is called an “account“. An account is a folder created on a server, where web pages reside. Thus, for example, a website like http://mydomainname.com, the folder where the website resides could be named as mydom or mydomain.

But this is not enough. Which means, that typing http://mydomainname.com would not automatically take you to a website.

For a domain name to point to an “account”, you use a concept called Nameservers.

A nameserver tells the domain name to point to the folder on the server, where the website is hosted.

Nameservers are set at the place where you booked the domain.

So, for your website to be active and ready for viewing on a browser:

1) Book your domain

2) Create an account on the server using CPANEL. This is done through a function on CPANEL called Addon Domain. Please remember to enter the name of the website correctly.

3) After you have booked the Domains through a domain registrar, please edit NameServer Setting. NameServers are typically of the nature “ns1.something.com” and “ns2.something.com”.

Once the domain names has been booked, the account has been created, and name servers are set, the website is ready to be served on the internet.

For those into the website business, Domain Name Management is extremely important. Please understand that as domain name manager, you are managing the very identity of your customer online.

Domain Names are annually renewable. If you do not renew a domain name, someone else may pick it up, and you may not be able to get it back except at great price and effort.
